How good is Saga home insurance?

Saga specialises in insurance for people aged 50 and over - it scored 4.1 out of 5 on Trustpilot from around 44,000 reviews.

Saga Select and Saga Plus are both rated five stars by Defaqto, with buildings, contents or combined cover available. Both policies offer new for old cover, a single-item value limit of £2,500 and 60 days of unoccupied home cover.

Saga’s current underwriter, Ageas, accepted 65-70%[2] of buildings-only claims and 75-80%[2] of contents-only claims in 2024. These are insurer-wide figures, rather than results for Saga customers alone.

Does Saga offer contents insurance?

Yes, Saga offers contents insurance on its own or alongside buildings cover, with two levels to choose from - Saga Select and Saga Plus. Both provide up to £100,000 of contents cover on a new-for-old basis, and you won’t need to list individual belongings kept at home unless they’re worth £2,500 or more.

Saga Plus includes accidental damage and worldwide personal belongings cover as standard, protecting items away from home for up to £10,000 per incident. Both can be added to Saga Select for an extra cost, while optional home emergency and legal expenses cover are also available.

What is included in Saga Plus home insurance?

Saga Plus includes up to £1 million of buildings cover and £100,000 of contents protection, with damaged or stolen belongings replaced on a new-for-old basis. It also covers homes left unoccupied for up to 60 days, subject to the policy terms.

Unlike Saga Select, Plus includes extended accidental damage and worldwide personal belongings cover as standard. Personal possessions are covered for up to £10,000 per incident, with a £2,500 single-item limit, while bicycles are protected for up to £1,000 in the UK, Isle of Man and Europe for trips lasting up to 60 days.

Saga Plus also includes matching sets cover, while trace and access protection extends up to the buildings sum insured rather than the £5,000 offered by Select. Its price is fixed for two years if nothing changes, although home emergency and legal expenses cover remain optional extras.

Is Saga Plus home insurance worth it?

Saga Plus may be worth considering if you want accidental damage and worldwide belongings cover without adding them separately. It could be particularly useful if you regularly travel with valuable possessions, or own matching furniture, kitchen units or bathroom fittings that may be difficult to replace individually.

The two-year fixed price may also provide some certainty at renewal, although it only applies when the details affecting your policy remain unchanged. The real value of this will depend on the difference between the Plus and Select premiums, rather than the number of features alone.

However, Plus doesn’t include every enhanced benefit automatically - home emergency and legal expenses still cost extra. It’s worth comparing the Plus premium with the price of Saga Select plus only the add-ons you need, as the cheaper policy may offer better value if you don’t require broad accidental damage or away-from-home protection.

Is Saga the best company to insure my home with?

Which home insurer is best for you will depend on your own needs and circumstances. Here are some advantages and disadvantages of Saga home insurance to help you make your decision:

  • Pros of Saga home insurance

    • Saga Plus received an 82%[4] contents policy score from Which?, ranking first among the 35 standard policies assessed

    • Saga Plus fixes the price for two years, provided there are no relevant changes to the policy or customer’s circumstances

    • Saga Plus provides alternative accommodation cover up to the buildings or contents sum insured, while contents in garages and outbuildings can be covered up to the overall contents limit

    • Ageas accepted 75-80%[2] of its combined home and contents-only claims in 2024

    • Saga Plus includes trace-and-access protection up to the overall buildings limit, while cancelling the policy doesn’t carry a cancellation fee

  • Cons of Saga home insurance

    • Saga received a customer score of 56%[4] from Which?, while its claims score was also relatively weak at 51%[4], ranking 22nd out of the 24 brands assessed

    • Ageas accepted 65-70%[2] of buildings-only claims in 2024

    • Saga Plus doesn’t cover groundwater flooding, whether the water level rises gradually or builds up rapidly

    • Which? recorded a £400 escape-of-water excess and a £1,000 subsidence excess on Saga Plus, so some common buildings claims could require a sizeable contribution

Alongside home insurance, Saga offers a number of other insurance and money products:

Who underwrites Saga home insurance?

Saga Home Insurance is arranged and administered by Ageas Retail Limited and underwritten by Ageas Insurance Limited.

Can I pay Saga home insurance in monthly instalments?

Yes, you can pay annually by credit or debit card, or spread the cost through monthly Direct Debit payments. Paying monthly includes a charge for credit, and missing an instalment could leave you without cover from the date the payment was due.

Does Saga home insurance cover subsidence?

Yes, buildings cover includes damage caused by subsidence or ground heave beneath the home, as well as landslip. Features such as patios, drives, garden walls, gates and fences are generally only covered when the main home is damaged by the same incident.

Exclusions include coastal or river erosion, normal settlement and some damage connected with structural alterations or defective workmanship.

Does Saga home insurance cover home emergencies and boiler breakdowns?

Home emergency protection is available as an optional extra, with two levels to choose from. Saga Home Emergency covers problems such as plumbing, drainage, internal electrics, security, roof damage and pest infestations, while Home & Heating Emergency also includes complete boiler breakdown.

Both provide unlimited callouts and up to £2,000 for each accepted claim, including labour, parts and materials. An annual boiler service can also be added, but routine maintenance, gradual deterioration and pre-existing faults aren’t covered.

Does Saga home insurance cover belongings away from home?

Saga Plus includes worldwide personal belongings cover as standard, while Saga Select customers can add it for an extra cost. You can choose £2,500, £5,000 or £10,000 of cover per incident, with a £2,500 single-item limit.

Bicycles are covered up to £1,000 within the UK, Isle of Man and Europe for trips lasting up to 60 days. Security requirements and other exclusions apply, particularly for items left unattended.

Does Saga home insurance cover gardens and outbuildings?

Yes, garages and permanent domestic outbuildings can form part of the insured property. Saga Plus also includes up to £5,000 of garden cover for belongings and features such as plants, trees, garden furniture, play equipment and barbecues.

Temporary or moveable structures may be treated as garden contents rather than outbuildings, while limits and exclusions apply to theft, storm damage and subsidence. Check your Statement of Fact for the cover provided by your individual policy.

What is the Saga home insurance excess?

Saga doesn’t have one fixed excess for every customer. Your Statement of Fact lists the amounts that apply, which may include:

  • A buildings excess

  • A contents excess

  • A separate escape-of-water excess

  • A different excess for certain claim types

  • Any voluntary excess you selected

If the same incident leads to claims under both buildings and contents cover, Saga deducts an excess for each section.
